Following severe downpours that flooded subways, streets, and airports, New York governor Kathy Hochul has issued an emergency declaration for New York City, Long Island, and the surrounding region. According to the Xinhua news agency, Ophelia's leftovers saturated New York City early on friday and produced flash flooding in certain areas.

For the whole tri-state, which includes New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, a flood watch is in place through 6 a.m. Saturday. Occasional rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour are predicted. Strong storms have caused widespread subway system closures in the Big Apple, flooded several streets and highways and blocked access to at least one LaGuardia airport terminal. Many Subways were shut down on friday morning, while others had to halt operation due to flooding stations, particularly in Brooklyn.


“There is only extremely limited subway service available because of heavy flooding. service is suspended at many stations,” the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)’s subway account posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. 

Following Hochul's warning on friday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued a similar directive, advising citizens to stay indoors through the brunt of the storm. "I want to remind everyone in New York that now is the moment to exercise extraordinary vigilance and heightened attention. Stay at home if you are. Shelter in place for the time being if you are at work or school, Adams advised. At 11 a.m. on friday, five inches of rain had fallen in certain areas of New York City. It rained the most in Central Park since Hurricane Ida's aftermath two years ago.

In the Brooklyn borough's red Hook section, video footage showed automobiles stranded in the flooded streets. In floodwater, some individuals were attempting to empty a drain. Due to the bad weather, a game between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets that was scheduled for friday night was cancelled. Adams referred to the weather as "dangerous" and claimed it was still ongoing. Before the day is done, "we might see eight inches of rain," he said.
