Chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on thursday ordered authorities to release water for cultivation of agricultural fields under the nagarjuna sagar Left Canal beginning on Friday, much to the relief of farmers in the former nalgonda and khammam districts.

He made the choice in response to appeals from farmers and elected officials in the area who warned of possible paddy crop damage owing to insufficient water delivery to their fields. The chief minister examined the current state of the crops and water availability amid low rainfall as he presided over a high-level review meeting with top officials from the Irrigation department on thursday at pragathi Bhavan.

He instructed the officials to release the water in two periods with a 20-day break because Telangana's portion of the krishna river has access to sufficient water. Given the continuous water crisis and the state of the nagarjuna sagar reservoir, Chandrashekhar Rao underlined the need to use water wisely. He requested that the former nalgonda and khammam district ministers and legislators take an active part in overseeing the water distribution to make sure that it reaches every farm field in the ayacut.
