The indian air Force (IAF) has begun procurement of 83 tejas aircraft, while Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) currently manufactures 8 aircraft per year and has a production capacity of 16 aircraft per year. prime minister Modi emphasized this approach during his visit to the US to negotiate for the indigenization of defense products, where GE Aerospace and HAL signed an agreement to jointly manufacture engines for the tejas Mk-II. prime minister Modi has continued to emphasize the importance of domestic defense manufacturing, and the central government is making efforts to increase manufacturing within india and promote exports of defense products. Notably, the light fighter tejas has attracted interest from various countries, leading to joint agreements between GE Aerospace and HAL for joint production of Mk-II tejas engines during the Prime Minister's visit to the US.

Highlighting the success of India's defense exports, Defense minister Rajnath Singh said in april that exports had reached an all-time high of Rs 15,920 crore in the 2022-2023 financial year.
