The government of india has awarded Bharat Ratna to puri Thakur, this is a commendable step. Karpoori Thakur influenced the politics of North india and especially the politics of bihar for a long time. He was a leader of the era when the opposition politics was based on the axis of anti-Congress. He was once the deputy chief minister of United bihar (Jharkhand was not separated at that time) and twice the chief minister in the Janata party government. Karpoori Thakur remained the leader of opposition for most of his long life. One of his greatest qualities was that no matter how much his opponents attacked him, he never retaliated. He was always on tour in the state, even if any small incident happened in any village, he was present there. From Socialist party to Lok Dal, Karpoori Thakur always fought for the downtrodden, poor and marginalized people of the society.

In 1977, when he was the chief minister of bihar, Karpoori ji implemented the Mungerilal Commission's reservation in government jobs for the backward class people, which was strongly opposed by the elders in the state. Later, Janata party broke on the issue of dual membership and then Ramsundar Das became the chief minister of the state. Karpoori Thakur never compromised with his principles. Once his differences with Chaudhary charan singh over a political issue became so serious that Lok Dal broke into two. Apart from Chaudhary charan singh, Devi Lal, Biju Patnaik, mulayam singh yadav and a big Jat leader of rajasthan supported Karpoori Thakur.
So, this was the stature of Karpoori Thakur. Chaudhary charan singh also realized his mistake and Lok Dal was unified again. Financial constraints always remained a challenge for Karpoori Thakur, he always kept winning the MLAs on his own and that too without any money. The party used to give election symbols and receipts of donations to the candidates and asked them to collect donations and fight. He was a very boisterous leader. He remembered the names of thousands of workers and supporters, his memory was excellent. Before going anywhere, he would check the security guards and the driver to see whether he had eaten or not.
