How is the date of lok sabha elections decided?
According to Article 324 of the indian Constitution, the election commission of india organizes the lok sabha, assembly and rajya sabha elections in India. It is the responsibility of the election commission to conduct elections within the time limit prescribed by the Constitution. The Commission also plays a paramount role in deciding the date of lok sabha elections.
The tenure of each house of the lok sabha is five years and new elections should be held before the expiry of this five year period. The Commission has to ensure the date of lok sabha elections in such a way that the time limit prescribed by the Constitution is not violated.
The election commission also keeps certain circumstances in mind while deciding the date of elections. For example, there should be such a date that on the day of election there should not be much heat or rain in that area which would affect the voting. Such a date is selected so that no political party gets unfair advantage and the elections can be conducted fairly. Apart from this, the election commission also considers religious festivals, national holidays, dates of special examinations, availability of security forces.
