Former chief minister of maharashtra and senior congress leader ashok chavan has surprised everyone by resigning from the Congress. ashok chavan has held senior ministerial posts in the congress (alliance) governments of maharashtra and was also the chief minister for two years. Chavan's father Shankar Rao Chavan has also been the chief minister of maharashtra twice. There is the only father-son duo in the state who have been CMs. Chavan, who till yesterday had been demanding maximum seats for congress in the I.N.D.I.A alliance meeting, today broke his ties with the party.

Although ashok Chavan's resignation from congress may be shocking, it was being speculated for almost a year. ashok chavan wanted to enter bjp after seeing better times.

Unhappy with congress leadership?

 Ashok Chavan wanted the post of President of maharashtra Pradesh congress for himself but this post was given to Nana Patole. It is said that in the last few months the tension between Nana Patole and ashok chavan had increased a lot. After the resignation of uddhav thackeray and the fall of the MVA government, ashok chavan wanted a better role for himself. After the split between first shiv sena and later NCP, he could not see the future of MVA. ashok chavan was also not happy with the distribution of lok sabha seats in Maharashtra. He did not accept that out of 48 seats in the state, shiv sena should contest on more seats and the national party congress should contest on less seats.

Important role of Devendra Fadnavis?

ashok chavan could have joined bjp much earlier and taken a ministerial post in Shinde cabinet, but maharashtra bjp leaders were not happy with taking Chavan into the cabinet. State bjp leaders want that if they join bjp, they should do central politics. There is speculation about Chavan joining bjp and it is being said that devendra fadnavis has an important role in it. Last year itself, several meetings took place between ashok chavan and Devendra Fadnavis. The central leadership of the party has also given the green signal to include Chavan in BJP. Many big leaders of bjp have said on public platform that Chavan is at the doorstep of BJP.
