6 march 2024... prime minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the country's first underwater metro section. This tunnel has been prepared in kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. The tunnel is part of the East-West Metro Corridor of kolkata Metro which is built under the Hooghly River.

According to the information regarding the underwater metro section, its length is 16.6 kilometers and this metro connects Howrah located on the western bank of Hooghly to salt Lake city on the eastern coast.

The special thing about this underwater metro is that the people traveling through it will not only have a different experience but will also save hours of their time. Actually, kolkata is a densely populated city, where there is so much congestion on the roads that it takes about one hour to 45 minutes for people to cover the distance by road between Howrah and Sealdah. In such a situation, the construction of this underwater metro will provide relief to the common people from long traffic jams.

When did the construction of the tunnel begin?

It took 13 years to build the underwater metro tunnel. For the construction of this tunnel, contracts were signed with different companies in the year 2009 itself. Then a year later in 2010, work on it started. The biggest challenge faced by the engineers during its construction was to build a 520 meter underwater tunnel in the Hooghly River near Howrah Bridge. The specialty of this metro tunnel is that it can withstand earthquake shocks. Even if water leaks, it will be immediately known.
