The upcoming lok sabha elections in 2024 hold significant importance for the bharatiya janata party (BJP), particularly in Uttar Pradesh, where the party aims to secure victory in all 80 seats. However, the five seats in Purvanchal present a challenge to achieving this target, as bjp faced defeat from the Samajwadi party (SP) in the previous elections.
In Azamgarh, bjp had tasted success in the by-election of 2022, with Dinesh Lal Yadav securing victory. However, in the 2019 general elections, SP's akhilesh yadav emerged victorious with a substantial margin, showcasing the dominance of the Yadav community in the constituency.
Similarly, BSP secured victories in Lalganj and Ghosi in the last elections, highlighting the diverse political landscape of Purvanchal. Atul Rai of BSP won the Ghosi seat, while Sangeeta azad secured victory in Lalganj. BJP's performance in these constituencies has been inconsistent, with sporadic victories over the years.
Ghazipur witnessed a significant upset for bjp in 2019, as afzal ansari of BSP emerged victorious, defeating BJP's Manoj Sinha. This loss was unexpected, considering Sinha's previous victories in the constituency. In Jaunpur, bjp also faced defeat in 2019, with shyam Singh Yadav of BSP securing victory. Despite BJP's past successes in the constituency, the dynamics shifted in favor of BSP in the last elections.
However, bjp managed to secure victory in Chandauli in the previous elections, albeit with a narrow margin. Dr. mahendra nath pandey won the seat for bjp, albeit with a reduced margin compared to previous elections. The 2022 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh saw bjp retaining power under chief minister Yogi Adityanath's leadership. However, the party's performance in Purvanchal was below expectations, with defeats on multiple assembly seats across various constituencies.
