For more than 20 years, the penukonda assembly constituency was a tdp stronghold. With the addition of paritala ravindra, an ex-Maoist, to the tdp at the founder-president N T Rama Rao's request, the constituency turned into a tdp stronghold. Supporters lovingly referred to paritala ravindra as she was elected as an mla in the 1994 assembly elections. Faction feuds controlled the 1990s and until his killing in 2005, when Maddilacheruvu Suryanarayana alias Suri and paritala ravindra were both killed by the devil of faction feuds.

In 1994, 1999, and 2004, ravindra was chosen as MLA. The five mandals of Parigi, penukonda, Gorantla, Somandepalle, and Roddam comprise the constituency. B K Parthasaradhi, the head of the tdp district, was elected as an mla from penukonda in 2009 and 2014. parthasaradhi ran an unsuccessful campaign against Malagundla Sankara Narayana, the YSRCP candidate, in 2019. parthasaradhi is succeeded in the 2024 elections by Somandepalli Savitha, a female candidate. At a well-attended public gathering in penukonda, party president N chandrababu naidu recently introduced Savitha to the audience.

Kia brought about a shift in the constituency's appearance, which sparked regional socioeconomic growth. As part of a special package under the 2014 ap Reorganisation Act, prime minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated NACIN in Palasamudram, which she hailed.
