After the state of andhra pradesh was bifurcated in 2014, Hyderabad, which was the shared capital, became part of the newly formed state of Telangana. This left andhra pradesh without a capital. In the 2014 assembly elections, the telugu desam party (TDP) won, and chandrababu naidu became the Chief Minister. He selected amaravati as the new capital and initiated several development projects there during his five-year term.

However, in the 2019 elections, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu congress Party (YSRCP) came to power, and jagan Mohan reddy became the Chief Minister. jagan proposed the idea of having three capitals for the state—executive, legislative, and judicial—leading to the neglect of amaravati and leaving andhra pradesh without a single definitive capital.

In the 2024 elections, the tdp won a significant majority, and chandrababu naidu returned as Chief Minister. He has since refocused efforts on Amaravati. Recently, Chandrababu criticized the previous government for damaging the brand image of amaravati and expressed his commitment to developing it into a major capital city for Andhra Pradesh. He lamented that even after ten years of the state's bifurcation, andhra pradesh remains without a proper capital city and vowed to transform amaravati into a prominent and prosperous capital.
