After the death of mgr in 1988, the party split into two. She turned the key leaders of the party towards her and became the head of the AIADMK. In 1989, the incident of DMK minister Durai Murugan dragging Jayalalithaa's sari in the assembly caused a scandal. After she won, DMK leader Karunanidhi was arrested overnight and created a sensation.
