Where do landslides occur according to NDMA?


According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), all types of landslides are seen in India, small and big, slow and fast, old and new. Landslides are a common natural disaster in hilly areas. Apart from the Himalayas, India's northeastern mountains, Western Ghats, Nilgiris, Eastern Ghats and Vindhyachal also have a big problem of landslides and avalanches. All these areas together cover about 15% of India.

The problem of landslides is very serious in Northeast India. Landslides keep happening every day in Darjeeling, Sikkim, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh of West Bengal, causing losses worth billions of rupees. A different kind of landslide also occurs on the Western Ghats of South India. There are hills with red soil sheets here, which slope towards the sea coast. The Nilgiri hills are also facing a similar problem.

The National Remote Sensing Center has studied the risk of landslides in hilly areas. According to them, Rudraprayag district of uttarakhand state is the area with the highest landslide in India. Most people live, work, are educated and have the highest number of houses here. The NRSC has ranked a total of 147 districts of 17 states and 2 union territories. In which it has been told that in which districts the risk of landslides is higher. Social and economic aspects have also been taken into consideration in this. There are 13 districts in uttarakhand which are dangerous in terms of landslides.


The problem of landslides is very serious in Kerala. In response to a question asked in the lok sabha in 2020, the government had said that geo-environmentally, 13 out of 14 districts of kerala are prone to landslides to varying degrees. Every year during the monsoon, many landslides occur on the fragile hill slopes of Kerala.
