After being elected to the lok sabha, congress leader Deepender Hooda vacated the rajya sabha seat. kiran Chaudhary, who was elected as a congress MLA from Tosham in Bhiwani in 2019, is the daughter-in-law of former haryana Chief minister Bansi Lal. Resigning from the primary membership of the congress, kiran said that the party is being run like a "personal estate". She was referring to former haryana Chief minister Bhupendra Hooda.
The last date for filing nominations for the rajya sabha by-election is august 21. congress has decided not to field its candidate. congress does not have a majority in the 90-member House. To win the rajya sabha seat, the candidate will need the support of 44 MLAs.
After kiran left the party, congress is left with 28 MLAs. Three independent MLAs have extended their support to congress, taking the number of congress MLAs to 31.
bjp has 41 MLAs. With the support of haryana Lokhit party MLA Gopal Kanda and independent Nayan Pal Rawat, its number of MLAs has increased to 43. Jannayak Janata party (JJP) MLAs ram Niwas Surjakheda and Jogi ram Sihag had supported bjp candidates in the lok sabha elections. If they also support BJP's rajya sabha candidate, the party's number will increase to 45.
