Today is the 80th birth anniversary of the then prime minister of the country, Rajiv Gandhi. He was born on 20 august 1944. Rajiv Gandhi's entry into politics was spontaneous after the assassination of his mother and then prime minister of the country, Indira Gandhi, in 1984. He was the prime minister of the country from 1984 to 1989. He was treacherously assassinated on 21 May 1991. rajiv gandhi was the youngest prime minister of India. He became the prime minister of the country at the age of just 40. On the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary, a floral tribute was offered to his statue installed near the State secretariat in Shimla. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Sadbhavna Diwas. chief minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu also administered the Sadbhavna Diwas oath to the officers and employees of the himachal pradesh Secretariat.

During this, chief minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that it is because of Rajiv Gandhi's farsightedness that india has emerged as a leading country in the field of information technology. He said that when America rejected India's demand for a supercomputer, then under his strong leadership the country took decisive steps to bring revolutionary changes in the field of information technology. He strongly advocated for the rights of women in the democratic process and 33 percent reservation was given in panchayati Raj institutions.


Voting age reduced from 21 years to 18 years

chief minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that the nation knows rajiv gandhi as the creator of modern India. While being the prime minister, he took many farsighted decisions to change the thinking of the people and the society. It is worth noting that when rajiv gandhi was the prime minister, the current chief minister of himachal pradesh Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu was the state president of the National students Union of india (NSUI). It was on the demand of NSUI that rajiv gandhi reduced the voting age of youth from 21 years to 18 years, so that the youth of the country could ensure active participation in the democratic process. This step is also seen as a major achievement of his tenure.
