The madras high court has given a four-week deadline to the tamil Nadu government on the Kalvarayan tribal development issue.
In june this year, 68 people died after consuming illicit liquor in Kallakurichi Karunapuram. Following this, there were complaints that illicit arrack was being brewed in Kalvarayan hills in Kallakurichi district. Subsequently, the madras high court took cognizance of the case for the upliftment of the Kalvarayan tribals. The case came up for hearing before a bench comprising trial judge of the case M.S Subramaniam and Sivagnanam yesterday.

The report submitted on behalf of the forest department was about the steps taken for road facilities in the Kalvarayan hills. Reading the report, the judges said, "Kalvarayan Hills is not fully accessible to vehicles. Ensure that roads are made so that ambulances can pass. The availability of doctors and nurses in primary health centres and teachers in schools should also be ensured. The forest department should not misuse its power against the tribals," he said.

Additional Advocate General Raveendran, appearing for the tamil Nadu government, said the forest department has been instructed not to misuse power against the tribal people. Development activities have been carried out there. We need time to complete those tasks."

"The government should set up special camps in four weeks to distribute Aadhaar, ration and voter ID cards to the people of Kalvarayan hills. A detailed report should be submitted on road facilities, appointment of teachers in schools and infrastructure facilities. The government should expedite the development of Kalvarayan Hills," he said.
