Modi and Putin Discuss Russia-Ukraine Conflict in Recent Call

Prime minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephonic conversation on Tuesday, where they discussed various bilateral and global issues, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Modi shared insights from his recent visit to ukraine and reiterated India's commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

During the call, Modi highlighted his recent visit to russia for the 22nd India-Russia Bilateral Summit, where both leaders reviewed their strategic partnership and explored ways to strengthen it. They also exchanged views on regional and global matters of mutual interest.

Modi emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy, stressing the need for sincere and practical engagement among all parties to achieve a lasting peace. Both leaders agreed to maintain regular communication on these issues.

In a social media update, Modi wrote, “Spoke with President Putin today. Discussed measures to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Exchanged perspectives on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and my insights from the recent visit to Ukraine. Reiterated India’s firm commitment to support an early, abiding, and peaceful resolution of the conflict.”

Biden Praises Modi's Peace Efforts

On Monday, US President Joe Biden praised Modi for his “message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support” for Ukraine. Biden's commendation followed Modi’s visit to Kyiv on august 23, which aimed to strike a diplomatic balance amid criticism from some Western nations following his trip to Russia.

Biden's statement highlighted the importance of Modi's visit and his efforts to promote peace. He also reiterated a shared commitment to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Zelenskyy Looks Forward to India’s Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a statement following Modi’s visit, expressed eagerness for a future visit to India, viewing it as a crucial player in global diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. Zelenskyy praised Modi’s visit as historic and emphasized the need for India's support in the peace process rather than a balancing act between the US and Russia.

Modi's visit to ukraine was the first by an indian prime minister since Ukraine’s independence in 1991. During his trip, Modi had urged both ukraine and russia to engage in dialogue to end the war, reflecting India’s long-standing position on seeking peaceful solutions.
