The tamil Nadu government has announced that free dhotis and sarees are being distributed to the poor through fair-price shops across tamil Nadu during the pongal festival.
Since all the free dhotis and sarees are produced through handlooms and pedal looms, this scheme will help in employing handloom and pedal loom weavers throughout the year. chief minister M K stalin has allocated rs 100 crore as advance to weavers cooperative societies to ensure the production and supply of dhotis and sarees for pongal under the free dhoti and saree scheme.
On the occasion of Thai pongal, 1,77,64,000 sarees and 1,77,22,000 dhoties will be distributed to the poor.

government said on Friday. On
january 15, they celebrate Pongal. According to an official release citing the
chief minister, all ration cardholders will receive a "Pongal gift" of Rs 1,000 cash through fair-price shops before the festival. The recipients do not include income tax payers, employees of the federal, state, or
local governments, those working in public sector organizations, holders of
sugar ration cards, or those with ration cards without any commodities.
