Supreme court Deliberates Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail Plea in delhi Excise Policy Case

On Thursday, the supreme court reserved its decision on delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea and his challenge against his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the delhi excise policy case. The case was reviewed by Justices surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, with Senior Advocate abhishek Manu Singhvi representing kejriwal and Additional Solicitor General sv Raju representing the CBI.

Singhvi argued that this case is unique as kejriwal has already been granted bail twice under the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), in addition to regular bail. He emphasized that kejriwal poses no threat and is not a flight risk, asserting that all co-accused have been released and questioning the timing of his arrest. Singhvi noted that the triple test for bail has been met and argued that the central agency's actions appeared to be a precautionary measure.

Kejriwal has filed two petitions challenging both his arrest and the denial of bail. Despite a trial court granting him bail in the ED case on june 20, this was later stayed by the delhi High Court. On august 5, the delhi High court upheld his arrest as legal, citing concerns about potential witness tampering.

Additionally, a court has recently taken cognizance of the CBI's charge sheet against kejriwal and others in the liquor policy scam, extending his custody until september 11.
