Government oversight over the Waqf Board is crucial...

The Waqf Board modification is now being discussed throughout the nation. A law on this was also introduced by the current Modi government during the previous Parliamentary session, however it was sent to the JPC after encountering stiff opposition from the opposition parties. The opposition claims that the government is not adequately prepared for the meeting. On the other hand, the administration asserts that the opposition is purposefully putting up barriers. The JPC met with representatives from the Railways and the Urban Development Board on Friday. There have already been two meetings prior to this one.

People of many religions live in India, there is a tradition of donating in all religions, but there is no specific institution for donations like the Waqf Board in any religion. We should understand this much about Waqf that even before independence and partition, some people got such laws made in collusion with the then government, so that their selfish interests could be fulfilled. Its rules and laws keep changing from time to time. Till date, no matter whose government is in power in the country, if you pay attention to the Waqf Board, then till date, Ashrafs, that is, the descendants of the Muslim rulers who came from outside or the upper class of Muslims are its managers. Waqf means donated property. That donated money and property should be used to help the poor, downtrodden and helpless people, but at present, the people of the Waqf Board manage it according to their own interests. Till date, the poor and oppressed Muslim people do not seem to be getting any special benefit from the Waqf Board.
