police on friday used water cannon to disperse people protesting in Mandi city of himachal pradesh demanding demolition of a part of a mosque built by encroaching on government land. The mosque management committee has been given a notice by the Mandi Municipal Corporation to remove the encroachment within 30 days. According to the notice, the mosque is built on 232 square meters of land while approval was given for only 45 square meters.

After the call for a protest march by Hindu organizations, the police has increased security by deploying heavy force in Mandi. On Thursday, people of the Muslim community themselves demolished an unauthorized part of the mosque located on Jail Road in the city. This mosque is built on the land of Public Works Department. In this case, both PWD and Municipal Corporation had sent notices to the mosque management.
VHP and Bajrang Dal members have demanded that all illegal structures of the Muslim community along with encroachment on government land across the state should be demolished. Meanwhile, chief minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and brotherhood. Sukhu said after the all-party meeting in Shimla, "I have appealed to everyone to maintain peace and not make any provocative statement. No one is allowed to take the law into their own hands. We respect everyone. The land of Himachal respects all religions."
