Who Is Vineet Goyal and Why Was His Removal Demanded?

Following intense protests by doctors, West bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced on monday night that kolkata police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, along with the director of health services and the director of medical education, would be removed from their posts. This decision came after a month-long standoff concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical college and Hospital on august 9.

Banerjee revealed that Goyal himself had offered to resign in response to the doctors' demands. “In light of the ongoing protests and the allegations against the kolkata police, vineet kumar Goyal has expressed his willingness to step down,” she stated. The new police commissioner’s name is expected to be announced after 4 pm on Tuesday, as per the Chief Minister's update following the resolution meeting.

Who Is kolkata police Commissioner Vineet Goyal?

Vineet Goyal, who succeeded Soumen Mitra as kolkata police Commissioner in december 2021, is a senior IPS officer of the 1994 batch. He is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur. Goyal’s career in the kolkata police has included roles such as deputy commissioner of police for the eastern suburban division, special branch, and headquarters. He has also served as joint commissioner of police for the Special Task Force and Traffic, as well as additional commissioner of police. He has been recognized with multiple awards, including the police medal for gallantry (twice), the police medal for meritorious service, and the chief minister’s medal for outstanding service.

Allegations Against Goyal

The call for Goyal's resignation was largely driven by the backlash following the rape and murder incident at RG Kar Medical college and Hospital. Doctors criticized Goyal's handling of the situation during the august 14 protest, which led to vandalism at the hospital. The accusations centered around alleged mismanagement of the situation, including claims that evidence may have been tampered with.

Goyal had defended the police’s actions, attributing the chaos to misinformation and rumors spread through social media, which he argued undermined public trust in the police. He admitted that, despite having sufficient security, the police were unprepared for the violent escalation outside RG Kar Hospital on august 15, which resulted in injuries to a deputy commissioner-ranked officer.

Goyal emphasized that the kolkata police had cooperated fully by transferring all evidence, including video-recorded post-mortem details, to the CBI, which is investigating the case under the calcutta High Court’s orders. He asserted that the police had been transparent and were not shielding any individuals involved, urging faith in the central probe agency.
