Chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council and economist Bibek Debroy passed away on Friday, november 1, 2024. Bibek Debroy has been associated with many major institutions of the government of India. He was appointed as the chairman in september 2017. In january 2015, he was made a permanent member of the NITI Aayog. Then the Planning Commission was replaced by the NITI Aayog. prime minister Narendra Modi condoled his death and said, Dr. Bibek Debroy has been described as a great scholar.

Since the Modi government came to power in 2014, Bibek Debroy has been associated with the departments formulating the economic policy of the government. As prime minister Economic Advisory Council Chairman Bibek Debroy has been continuously advising the government on macroeconomic issues, fiscal policy, employment and management of public sector companies. He has also been the chairman of the committee formed for the reorganization of the Railway Ministry during the year 2014 to 2015. Bibek Debroy received his schooling at ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur. After that he studied at Presidency college, kolkata and delhi School of Economics. After this, he went to the university of Cambridge to pursue higher education through Trinity college Scholarship. Sharing his photo with Bibek Debroy on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, I have known Dr Bibek Debroy for many years. I will always fondly remember his deep knowledge and passion for academic discourse. PM Modi said, he is deeply saddened by the demise of Bibek Debroy. The prime minister has sent his condolences to his family and friends.
PM Modi said, Bibek Debroy was a great scholar who had vast knowledge of economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and other fields. With his works, he has left an indelible mark on India's intellectual landscape. Apart from his contribution to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts and making them accessible to the youth. Bibek Debroy worked at Presidency college from 1979 to 1983. After this, he was associated with the Pune-based Gokhale Institute of politics and economics from 1983 to 1987. Bibek Debroy has also written several books and translated religious texts.
