On Wednesday, november 6, telangana launched an ambitious and comprehensive statewide caste survey aimed at gathering crucial socio-economic, educational, and political data across all communities. The government has stressed the confidentiality of the data and urged citizens to participate willingly, assuring them that no personal documents will be collected. The survey is intended to enable effective planning and implementation of policies that will benefit backward classes (BCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), scheduled tribes (STs), and other marginalized groups in the state.

Transparency and Confidentiality Emphasized by government Officials

Telangana's Transport minister, Ponnam Prabhakar, highlighted the need for voluntary participation and reassured citizens that the information collected would remain confidential. Speaking on behalf of the state, deputy chief minister Mallu bhatti vikramarka appealed to the public to cooperate fully and to trust in the process, dispelling any fears that the data could be misused. Both officials emphasized that no identification documents would be requested, ensuring that the data gathering would be as unobtrusive as possible.

Extensive survey Process to Cover Over 1 Crore Families

With around 95,000 enumerators and 10,000 supervisors deployed across the state, the scale of the survey is unprecedented in Telangana. The first phase, set to run until november 8, involves creating a list of households by documenting house numbers and the head of each family. Each house visited will receive a sticker indicating completion. In the second phase, beginning on november 9, enumerators will conduct detailed surveys, covering a total of 87,092 enumeration blocks, each containing 150 to 175 families.

Primary school teachers and employees from other government departments are among those appointed to help ensure the smooth and accurate collection of information.


Gathering Data for Targeted Policy Initiatives

The survey aims to collect information on various facets of citizens’ lives, including education, employment, caste, and socio-economic conditions. Enumerators will gather responses to 75 questions covering topics such as household income, assets, debts, occupations, and family members’ employment status. Migrants and those working abroad will also be documented, as well as family members serving as elected representatives.


Combatting Misinformation and Ensuring Public Trust

minister for Information technology and industry D. sridhar Babu, who inaugurated the survey in Rangareddy district, addressed public concerns about potential implications for ration card and arogyasri card holders. He assured citizens that these benefits would not be affected by their participation and encouraged people to disregard such rumors.


CM’s Request to Align with National Efforts

Chief minister A. revanth reddy met with governor Jishnu Dev varma to brief him on the survey’s progress and procedures. revanth reddy described the survey as a model for socio-economic and caste-based data collection across the nation, expressing hope that the central government would consider Telangana's findings during the national census in 2025. He requested the governor to draw the union government’s attention to the state survey to facilitate integration and insights into the broader national census.


This pioneering initiative marks a significant step for telangana as it aims to gain a clearer understanding of its diverse population, paving the way for more inclusive development policies tailored to uplift disadvantaged communities.
