Addressing a public meeting in Madha in Solapur district, sharad pawar recalled an incident of defection, which led to him losing the post of leader of Opposition in the assembly about five decades ago and his determination led to the defeat of all those who had 'betrayed' him.

'All 52 MLAs who left me lost'

The ncp (SP) leader further said that in the 1980 elections, 58 people from our party won the elections and I became the leader of the Opposition. I went abroad and when I came back I realized that chief minister AR Antulay had done a miracle and 52 out of 58 MLAs had switched sides. I lost the post of leader of the Opposition. Addressing a rally, Pawar said, "I did nothing (at that time). I just started contacting people across the state and worked hard for three years. In the next elections, I fielded young candidates against all the 52 MLAs who had deserted me. I am proud of the people of maharashtra that all the 52 MLAs who deserted me lost."

'Those who betrayed should be shown their place'

Pawar (83) underlined his status as an undefeated leader since becoming an mla in 1967 at the age of 27, saying I have my own experiences. He said, "Those who betrayed should be shown their place. Don't just defeat them, but defeat them badly."
