Harini Amarasuriya has taken over as the 16th prime minister of Sri Lanka. She has become the third woman to hold the post of prime minister in the history of Sri Lanka. The new PM of sri lanka is well educated and also has a special connection with India.
Harini Amarasuriya's educational journey started from India. Due to the closure of schools and colleges in sri lanka during the tamil movement, she enrolled in Hindu college, university of delhi in 1990. Here she completed her graduation in sociology. During her days at Hindu college, harini not only showed excellence in studies but also actively participated in college festivals and debates. Interestingly, famous film director Imtiaz ali has been her batchmate. After graduation, she completed her PhD in Social Anthropology from the university of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Return to sri lanka and social work
After education, harini Amarasuriya worked in an NGO related to health and education in Sri Lanka. Her efforts to help children affected by the tsunami brought her widespread recognition. Subsequently, she served as a professor in a college and taught in the field of sociology and humanities.
Harini's political career
In 2019, harini entered politics through the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party. Due to her social commitment and leadership ability, she was elected mp in 2020. In september 2024, she was appointed as the interim prime minister of sri lanka, which is a testimony to her leadership ability.
Pride of Hindu college and ties with India
Hindu college Principal Anju Srivastava expressed pride in Harini's achievement and said that it is an honor for the college. She said that the education of Hindu college would have helped harini to hone leadership skills. This new role of harini can prove to be important in further strengthening the relations between india and Sri Lanka. Her former batchmates also expressed happiness over this achievement.
