Reportedly voting was held today for by-elections on nine assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh which fell vacant after the lok sabha elections. The nine assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh where elections are to be held include Katehari (Ambedkarnagar), Karhal (Mainpuri), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), ghaziabad, Majhawan (Mirzapur), Sisamau (Kanpur city), Khair (Aligarh), Phulpur (Prayagraj) and Kundarki (Moradabad). By-elections will be held on these seats on november 20 and the results will be declared on november 23. Out of these, eight seats have fallen vacant after the current MLAs were elected to the lok sabha, while in Sisamau, by-election is being held after the current SP mla Irfan Solanki was convicted in a criminal case.
As per report a total of 90 candidates are in the fray in the by-election. The maximum number of 14 candidates are in the fray from ghaziabad assembly constituency. At the same time, the least number of five candidates are trying their luck on Khair (reserved) and Sisamau seats. In the 2022 assembly elections, the SP won Sisamau, Katehari, Karhal and Kundarki seats while the bjp won Phulpur, ghaziabad, Majhawan and Khair. The Meerapur seat was with the Rashtriya Lok Dal, which is now an ally of the BJP. The congress is not contesting the by-election and is supporting its india Alliance ally SP. The Bahujan Samaj party is contesting all nine seats on its own.
Moreover asaduddin owaisi led AIMIM has fielded its candidates on ghaziabad, Kundarki and Meerapur seats while Chandrashekhar's azad Samaj party (Kanshi Ram) has fielded candidates on all seats except Sisamau. The results of the by-elections will not have any direct impact on the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly, but it will send a message to various political parties. While the SP will aim to increase its numbers in the House, the bjp and its ally RLD will try to further strengthen their presence in the Assembly.
