The governor has approved the ordinance related to OBC reservation, after which the election process is likely to move forward rapidly. The uttarakhand government had prepared an ordinance regarding the legal amendments required to implement OBC reservation. This ordinance was sent to the raj bhavan after getting the approval of the Law Department. The Governor's law team had stopped it citing some legal aspects and sought opinion on it from the Law Department of the government. The Law Department recommended to approve this ordinance, after which the governor gave his approval to it.
Meanwhile after the approval of the raj bhavan, now the way is completely clear for the government to implement OBC reservation. This process is being done for the first time in uttarakhand on the basis of the report of a single-member dedicated commission. With the approval of the ordinance, now the government has expedited the process of implementing OBC reservation. OBC reservation will be ensured in the bodies on the basis of the report of the single-member commission. The state government says that this step is an important initiative towards giving adequate representation to the backward classes in local self-governance.
Moreover according to sources, the notification for the body elections may be issued by the end of this month. The government has started all preparations to complete the election process on time. The election commission has also indicated that the election schedule will be announced as soon as the notification is issued.
After the ordinance regarding OBC reservation was passed, political rhetoric has also intensified in Uttarakhand. Opposition parties have raised questions about the government's delay on this issue. The congress has said that the government did not resolve this problem in time, which delayed the local body elections. On the other hand, the bjp has called it a historic step in the interest of the backward classes. The supreme court had made it clear that a detailed study and commission report is necessary to implement reservation.
