Delhi's name is always at the top in road accident deaths across the country. In the year 2023, 1,457 people died due to road accidents in Delhi. This was revealed by Union Road Transport minister Nitin Gadkari in response to a question in the lok sabha on thursday (December 12). He said that delhi is the number one city in terms of deaths due to road accidents. It is followed by Bengaluru, jaipur and Kanpur. These cities come second, third and fourth respectively.

According to a report released by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, last year delhi had the highest number of deaths due to road accidents among cities with a population of more than one million. delhi has more than 80 lakh registered vehicles.

In the year 2023, the highest number of 1,457 deaths were recorded in Delhi. After this, there were 900 deaths in Bengaluru, 849 in jaipur, 638 in Kanpur. About 36.5% of the deaths occurred on national highways.

They have the highest share in road accidents

One person died in every fourth accident on delhi roads. Four people lose their lives in such accidents every day. According to the data released by delhi Police in October, pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler drivers have a share of about 83% in road accidents.

88% two-wheeler drivers wear helmets

A study conducted by IIT delhi on the orders of the supreme court on road safety found that about 44% of the roads in the national capital have no pedestrian walkway. Only a little more than 25% of the existing roads meet the width and height norms set by the indian Road congress (IRC). The safety and survey also found that more than 88% of two-wheeler drivers and pillion riders in the urban areas of delhi wear helmets. delhi tops the list of road accidents in rural areas.
