shiv sena (UBT) chief uddhav thackeray on thursday began a three-day exercise to take stock of his party's preparations in view of the proposed municipal elections in Mumbai. A close aide of his gave this information. Municipal elections are likely to be held in mumbai next year. The recently concluded assembly elections in maharashtra were seen as a test for Uddhav's party after the 2022 split in the shiv sena founded by Bal Thackeray. shiv sena (UBT) is a constituent of the opposition alliance maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

The MVA, however, managed to win only 46 out of the 288 assembly seats in the state, out of which shiv sena (UBT) won 20 seats. Out of the 36 assembly seats in mumbai, shiv sena (UBT) contested 21 seats and won 10. shiv sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab said, "Uddhav ji is reviewing the election preparations of shiv sena (UBT) in all 227 municipal wards of Mumbai. The deliberations will go on for three days."

If the supreme court gives its verdict on the "OBC (Other Backward Classes) quota" in January, the local body elections, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), may be held in March-April 2025. The five-year term of most municipal bodies, including the BMC, and many other local bodies in the state ended in 2022. The supreme court had ruled in december 2021 that reservation for OBCs in local bodies will not be allowed unless the government fulfills the 'three criteria' laid down in the apex court's 2010 order.

The three criteria required the state government to set up a dedicated commission to collect data on backwardness of OBCs in each local body, to decide the ratio of reservation in each local body in the light of the Commission’s recommendations, and to ensure that such reservation does not exceed 50 per cent of the total seats reserved for SC/ST/OBCs.
