The bank OF INDIA' target='_blank' title='reserve bank of india-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>reserve bank of india (RBI) said on wednesday that 98.12 percent of Rs 2000 notes have returned to the banking system so far. According to this, such notes worth Rs 6691 crore of Rs 2000 are still with the people. RBI had announced the withdrawal of bank notes worth Rs 2000 from circulation on May 19, 2023. Since then the process of withdrawing these notes is going on.

Total notes left fell from Rs 3.56 lakh crore to Rs 6691 crore

RBI said in a statement that the total value of Rs 2000 bank notes in circulation fell to Rs 6691 crore at the end of business on december 31, 2024. This value was Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023, the day of RBI's decision. The Reserve bank said that "In this way, a total of 98.12 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation till May 19, 2023 have been returned."

Facility to exchange notes still available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank

The facility to deposit or exchange these notes was available in all bank branches till october 7, 2023. However, this facility is still available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank. Apart from this, common people can send Rs 2000 notes through post from any post office in the country to any issue office of RBI to deposit them in their bank accounts.

Rs 2000 notes still legal tender

Despite being withdrawn from circulation, Rs 2000 notes remain legal tender. RBI introduced Rs 2000 notes in november 2016 after the then prevalent Rs 1000 and Rs 500 bank notes were removed from circulation. Initially, there was a lot of enthusiasm among people about the pink notes of Rs 2000 and RBI's decision to withdraw these notes from circulation was unexpected for the people.
