After a four decade long wait, the toxic waste of the gas tragedy has now been taken to Pithampur, about 250 km away from Union Carbide factory in Bhopal, for disposal. There is an atmosphere of fear among the local people of Pithampur regarding this and it is also being opposed continuously.
Protests were held from delhi to Pithampur against burning of 337 metric tonnes of toxic waste in Pithampur. On Thursday, Pithampur Bachao Samiti drew the attention of the President by protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Human Rights Council also joined the ongoing protest in Delhi.
An all-party protest is being held at Maharana Pratap bus Stand in Pithampur. A call for Pithampur bandh has been given on january 3, which is supported by all political, social, religious and labour organizations. Meanwhile, sandeep Raghuvanshi, who has been vocally opposing toxic waste in Pithampur since day one, has also sat on a fast unto death. He says that he will continue his hunger strike until the toxic waste is not removed from Pithampur, even if it costs him his life.
Amidst the protests, 337 metric tons of toxic waste present inside the Union Carbide factory was loaded into containers at 9 pm last night and left for Pithampur, which reached Pithampur at around 4:23 am today. A 250 km long green corridor was built to safely transport the containers to Pithampur. Let us tell you that on the orders of the court, this deadly toxic waste will be destroyed at Pithampur Industrial Waste Management Private Limited. The place where this dangerous toxic waste will be destroyed has a large number of residential areas around it, and extra precautions are also being taken for their safety.
