Reportedly the delivery boys of zomato and Swiggy, who rush to your house as soon as you order food, sometimes do not even get bread. As soon as they leave work, they come on the road and they are on the verge of dying of hunger. They do not have any financial support even in case of prolonged illness. This is the situation of lakhs of gig workers of the country engaged in other jobs like them. To free the gig workers from the worry of such crisis to a great extent, the government of india is working on a large social security framework. It is likely to be implemented from June.

Meanwhile the compulsion of the government of india to work on a social security framework for gig workers is due to non-implementation of the new labor code. This will be a big framework for the welfare of this huge workforce. According to a business Standard report, a senior official of the government of india said that the Labor Ministry is going to launch the Framework for Social Security Coverage for the welfare of millions of gig and online platform workers. The target has been set to launch it in June.

Under the new framework, the government of india can provide a unique identity number to every gig worker. Through this, it can be considered to give them the benefit of medical insurance and provident fund like permanent employees of the private sector. It is possible that the government of india may also consider giving them pension facilities etc. in the future like the employees of the private sector. This will provide them at least the basic minimum security of living even in the absence of job security. The number of gig workers in the country is expected to reach 2 crore 35 lakh by 2030. This will be more than four percent of the entire work force.
