In the Prayagraj maha Kumbh, along with naga saints, jangam Sadhus have also come in the Akharas of the Shaiv sect. These jangam Sadhus, who sing praises of Lord shiva and Mother Parvati in a special way through their different costumes and songs, have become the center of attraction among the people in the maha Kumbh. These jangam Sadhus call themselves priests of the Akharas of the Sanyasi tradition and take alms from the naga ascetics by singing songs of devotion to Bholenath using special musical instruments.
The group of jangam Sadhus who have come from haryana and other states in the maha Kumbh have become the center of attraction among the devotees due to their unique costumes. A large peacock feather is attached to the turban of these jangam Sadhus. It is said that this peacock feather is a symbol of Lord Vishnu, the savior of the universe. As a symbol of Lord shiva, a silver Nagraj sits in the front part of the turban. They also wear bells and earrings as a symbol of the ornaments of Goddess Parvati. They wear five symbols of five gods and goddesses.
jangam Sadhus live their lives singing the praises of Bholenath
These jangam Sadhus walk while singing special songs and bhajans based on Lord Bholenath using unique musical instruments. Their bhajans include shiva Vivah Katha, Kalyug Ki Katha and Shiv Puran. Their main job is to live their lives with the money and materials received as donations while singing the praises of Lord Bholenath. Once they start walking, they do not stop anywhere. On hearing the sound of their musical instruments and songs, naga Sanyasis themselves come out of the camp and give them donations. They never beg in front of anyone.
A crowd of people gathers in maha Kumbh to see and listen to jangam Sadhus. jangam Sadhus belong to the Brahmin community. According to traditions, only a few people do this work from generation to generation. Outsiders cannot become jangam Sadhus. jangam sadhus come only in Kumbh and Mahakumbh. Being priests, they take dakshina from naga ascetics.
