The air Intelligence Unit of Customs at Delhi's indira gandhi International airport foiled a major gold smuggling racket and caught two indian smugglers, including a woman, from whom about two kilograms of gold was recovered. It was smuggled to delhi by hiding it very cleverly. The value of the recovered gold is said to be more than Rs 1 crore 41 lakh. According to information received from Customs officials, the air Intelligence Unit of Customs has recovered 1.94 kilograms of 24 carat purity gold, which was recovered from the luggage of a male and a female passenger. Both of them had arrived at Delhi's IGI airport from bahrain on the night of january 12 by flight number GF-134.

The gold was smuggled from the trolley bags

The Customs team stopped both the indian passengers for questioning and investigation on the basis of suspicious route and suspicion. The weight of the two stroller bags of both the passengers put in the check-in was found to be more than normal even after they were emptied. When the trolley bags of both the passengers were screened with X-ray, the image of some dense metallic round wire was seen in the lining of the bag. On this, the lining of the trolley bag was cut and that metallic wire coated with silver was taken out. Investigation revealed that it was pure gold, which was smuggled to delhi by hiding it cleverly in the lining of the trolley bag.

Smuggling of gold in the form of silver coated wire

The officer said that 15 silver coated wires were taken out from the lining of the trolley bag of the indian passenger caught in this case, which was made of 24 carat pure gold and weighed 1528 grams. The value of gold recovered from the male passenger is more than one crore 11 lakh 15 thousand, while 4 silver coated wires of gold weighing 420 grams were recovered from the lining of the bag of the female passenger. Its value is said to be more than 30.5 lakh rupees. In this case, the customs team has seized the gold under the Customs Act 1962 and arrested both the air passengers on charges of smuggling. Further investigation is going on in this case.
