PMEGP: How many jobs were created in rural and urban areas?
According to the data presented in the Lok Sabha, almost every year more jobs have been created in rural areas than in urban areas. There has been a steady increase in employment generation in rural areas till 2023-24, which is a positive sign for the rural economy. From 2019-20 to 2023-24, more than 5 lakh jobs have been created in rural areas through PMEGP every year. Less jobs were created through PMEGP in urban areas. The performance of PMEGP has improved in urban areas since 2021-22.
PMEGP: Did the villagers benefit even during the Covid pandemic?
In 2021-22, the PMEGP scheme broke the record of employment generation in rural areas. This year 6.77 lakh new employment opportunities were created, which is the highest in any single year. This year, the highest number of 1.03 lakh new units were provided assistance across the country, creating 825,752 new employment opportunities. This was the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, when employment in cities was badly affected. During this time, a large number of people were migrating from cities to villages.
On the other hand, the maximum employment in cities under PMEGP was created in 2023-24, when 1.61 lakh jobs were created. This shows that after Covid, businesses in cities are slowly getting back on track and gaining momentum. The highest margin money subsidy of Rs 3093.87 crore was distributed in 2023-24 itself.
