Which class of people benefited the most in PMEGP?

Prime Ministers Employment Generation Programme has provided many employment opportunities to women and Scheduled Castes / scheduled tribes / Other backward classes people. The participation of women in this is increasing continuously. In 2023-24, most women got the benefit of this scheme. scheduled caste people are also getting employment opportunities through PMEGP. The participation of scheduled tribes and Other backward classes people has remained almost stable.

Under the scheme, a total of 985,047 businesses were started across the country from 2008 to 2024 with the help of the government. Of these, the people of the general category started a total of 329,039 businesses. Almost the same number of 327,628 new businesses were started in the OBC category. 113,247 businesses were started in Scheduled Castes and 83,896 in Scheduled Tribes. Apart from this, 131,237 people started business in the minority category. About 32% i.e. 321,333 women also took funds from the government to start their own business.

The government has placed women, scheduled caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC) and transgender people in the 'special category'. People coming in this category are given more money (subsidy) to start a business. People of the special category can get subsidy up to 35% in villages and 25% in cities. The rest of the people (general category) get subsidy up to 25% in villages and 15% in cities. People of the special category have to invest only 5% money in their business, while the rest have to invest 10% money themselves.
