electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh may get a big shock. The Regulatory Commission is preparing to implement new standards for fixing tariff in the state soon. After the electricity rates are fixed under the new standards, consumers may also have to bear the brunt of electricity theft and losses incurred by power companies. If this proposal is implemented, then obviously it will have a direct impact on electricity consumers and there may be a tremendous increase in electricity rates. Already, resentment is being seen in the UP State electricity Consumer Council regarding the new tariff standards.

The Consumer Council has described the new tariff standards as beneficial for private houses and has raised questions about the role of the electricity Regulatory Commission in this entire matter. The council said that consumers will have to bear the brunt of the new standards. Soon online feedback will be taken on this issue, after which a struggle can be announced against it.

Consumer Council opposed the new standards

Every year, electricity rates are fixed in the state on the basis of multi-year distribution tariff regulations. Earlier in 2019, regulations were made for the next five years, the period of which has now ended and now it is being prepared afresh. In the new draft, many changes have been made in the tariff determination law. Under which the consumers will be compensated for the loss caused by power theft, financial losses to the companies and corruption.

Consumer Council President Awadhesh Verma said that such standards will increase the electricity rates. The new standards have been made under pressure from private houses willing to take over the five companies proposed for privatization. These will eliminate the surplus of Rs 33,122 crore on power companies and consumers will have to bear the loss. He demanded to maintain the old standards without coming under pressure and expressed hope that the commission will take a decision in the interest of consumers.
