Voters participated enthusiastically in the recently concluded local body elections in Uttarakhand. Amidst the expectation of peaceful voting across the state, irregularities and controversies also came to the fore at some places. According to the election Commission, this time more than 65% voting was recorded, which is slightly higher than the previous elections.

Crowds of people were seen at polling stations in various districts of the state since morning. There was a good turnout in major areas like dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar. women and elderly people also participated enthusiastically in voting in rural areas. However, the low voting percentage in some urban areas has worried political analysts. Experts believe that lack of awareness among urban voters and the festive season could be the main reason for this.

Problems in the election process in Haridwar and Haldwani

Controversies also came to the fore at some places during the election process. The biggest controversy was about the name missing from the voter list. Many voters complained that their names had been removed from the voter list. Due to this many people could not exercise their franchise. In Haridwar and dehradun districts, there was also a tussle between voters and officials at some places on this issue. Apart from this, voting was delayed due to technical fault in EVMs at some polling stations. However, the officials soon controlled the situation.

There were reports of clashes between supporters of political parties in areas like Ramnagar and Roorkee. Some people were injured in these clashes, but the situation remained under control due to prompt action by the police. The local administration had deployed adequate police force to increase security at the polling stations, due to which voting was peaceful at most places.
