There is a debate going on about working 70 hours in India. On one hand, Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy had talked about the youth in india working 70 hours a week, while the chairman of L&T had given a statement about working 90 hours a week. Meanwhile, Dr. Shamika Ravi, a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, released a research paper, which revealed how much people actually work in India.

She titled her analysis as Time Spent on Employment-Related Activities in india, which is based on the data used by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI) in 2019.

How much do indians work?

Salaried workers in india work an average of 422 minutes every day and about 42 hours a week. While people in cities work for 469 minutes (7.8 hours), people in villages work for an average of 399 minutes (6.65 hours). Similarly, government employees work 45 minutes less per day than workers in private or public limited companies. Whereas government employees in cities work one hour more per day than government employees in villages.

Work culture in different states

Union territories like daman and diu and Dadra and nagar Haveli work for more than 600 minutes per day, while goa and the northeastern states work for less than 360 minutes on an average. On one hand, people in delhi work for 8.3 hours, while workers in goa work for only 5.5 hours.

Difference in working hours of men and women

Impact of working hours on economic productivity

Dr Ravi's analysis found that a 1% increase in working hours leads to a 1.7% increase in per capita net state domestic product (NSDP). In larger states, a 1% increase in working hours leads to a 3.7% increase in NSDP.
