Valmik Karad has been arrested

Valmik Karad, an associate of state government minister and nationalist congress party (NCP) leader dhananjay Munde, has been arrested in connection with the extortion case related to the murder of the sarpanch. Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh of Masajog village in Beed district was kidnapped on december 9, tortured and then killed.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the sarpanch had attempted to foil an extortion bid from a power company operating a windmill project in the area. Munde, an ncp mla from Parli in Beed district, has been under fire from some allies of the ruling coalition and the opposition over his links with Karad.

bjp leader chandrakant patil said, "Investigation is underway in the Santosh Deshmukh murder case. Every case is different. As the head of the government, chief minister devendra fadnavis is fully capable of taking decisions. If he feels there is truth in the allegations, he will take immediate action and ask Munde to resign." Patil said, "The maharashtra government has confiscated the property of the accused in the Sarpanch Deshmukh murder case. Strict sections have been imposed on the accused and the investigation into the case is ongoing." Patil said the police are actively investigating the case and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to investigate it.

The minister said that in addition, a committee headed by a retired judge has been formed to monitor the investigation. Patil said that strict action under the maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) and other steps are being taken against Valmik Karad and other accused. He said that the process of confiscating Karad's property is also underway.
