ASEAN i.e. 'Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (ASEAN) is a group of South-East Asian countries. This group was formed so that peace and friendship remains between these countries, especially when these countries had just become independent and tensions were increasing between them. The motto of ASEAN is 'One vision, one identity, one community'. The headquarters of ASEAN is in Jakarta city of Indonesia.
ASEAN includes 10 countries of South east Asia. This group was formed on 8 august 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand. Its main objective is to increase political, economic and social cooperation and maintain peace among these countries. The founding countries of ASEAN are: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, singapore and Thailand.
After the end of the vietnam war in 1975 and the Cold war in 1991, there were many changes in this region. After this, the number of ASEAN members doubled in the 1990s. brunei (1984), vietnam (1995), Laos-Myanmar (1997) and cambodia (1999) also joined ASEAN.
What is India's relationship with ASEAN countries?
India and ASEAN have deep and strong relations. This relationship is an important part of India's foreign policy. Both started working together in the 1990s. This friendship between the two grew because both had similar economic and strategic interests. india started the 'Look east Policy' in 2014, which meant that now india will connect more deeply with ASEAN countries and work more together.
The friendship between india and ASEAN has deepened in the last thirty years. There are many ways of interaction between the two, such as the ministers of india and ASEAN meet several times a year and discuss different issues. Officials of both also meet and work regularly.
India has been participating in ASEAN meetings since 1992. Due to this, both have jointly made several 'action plans', which determine how the two will work together. One such new 'action plan' was made in 2020, which emphasized political, security and economic cooperation.
