Is communal tension increasing in India, related to politics?
A new report by the Center for Study of Society and Secularism is shocking. In 2024, there has been a sudden increase of 84% in the incidents of communal violence in India. This means that this year there were many more communal riots as compared to last year.
According to this report, out of a total of 59 riots in 2024, 12 took place in maharashtra alone, which presents a horrific picture of communal tension in the country. These figures show that communal tension is increasing in India. Incidents of fights and violence between people of different religions are increasing.
The fact that most riots are taking place in maharashtra raises many serious questions. It is natural to ask why so many riots took place in Maharashtra? Why is our land getting drenched in blood again and again? Why are the talks of brotherhood and unity limited to mere slogans? Is this just a failure of law and order or is there a deep political conspiracy behind it?
The CSSS report is based on news reports published in five reputed newspapers. These five newspapers reported 32 communal riots in 2023, the same newspapers reported 59 communal riots in 2024. The maximum riots took place in maharashtra (12), followed by Uttar Pradesh (7) and bihar (7). 13 people (3 Hindus and 10 Muslims) lost their lives in these communal riots. However, this report does not mention the incidents of Manipur violence.
Communal violence in the eyes of law
The indian Penal Code (IPC) sees communal violence as an act that promotes enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, caste, place of birth, residence, language etc. and which is against the maintenance of peace and order. It means any act which incites people against each other in the name of religion, caste or language or creates hatred among them. This is called communal violence. Section 196 of the indian Penal Code has been made to prevent and punish such acts which promote enmity and hatred between groups on different grounds. This section tries to maintain social harmony i.e. brotherhood. Under this, those who do such acts can be sentenced to jail and fined. Especially, if this act is done at a religious place or during a religious program, then it is considered a more serious crime and the punishment can also be higher.
