Congress has made a big reshuffle in Maharashtra. On thursday (13 February), the party appointed Harshvardhan Vasantrao Sapkal as the new president in place of Nana Patole. Nana Patole had offered to resign from the post of president after a crushing defeat in the assembly elections.
In the assembly elections held late last year, congress had to face a crushing defeat under the leadership of Nana Patole. The party won only 16 assembly seats. Since then, questions started being raised on his leadership.
However, in the lok sabha elections, congress managed to win 13 out of 48 lok sabha seats. After this, it seemed that the party's performance would improve further in the assembly elections, but congress was badly defeated in the assembly elections.
Who is Harshvardhan Sapkal?
Sapkal is a senior leader of maharashtra Congress. He was appointed the President of rajiv gandhi Panchayati raj Organization in august last year. He replaced Meenakshi Natrajan.
Harshvardhan Sapkal was elected mla from Buldhana seat in maharashtra in the 2014 assembly elections. He lost the election in 2019. In the 2024 assembly elections, this seat went to the quota of the uddhav thackeray faction. Sanjay Gaikwad of the shiv sena Shinde faction is currently the mla from here. Sapkal was suspended along with 18 other MLAs till december 31 for obstructing maharashtra Finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar during the state budget session on 22 march 2017 and burning copies of the budget outside the assembly four days earlier. Harshvardhan Vasantrao Sapkal hails from Buldhana district of Maharashtra. He has done B.Com.
