Centre monitoring Chinese language mega dam plan, Centre tells Rajya Sabha
India is aware of China's plan to build a large dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, which is the upper part of the Brahmaputra River. The environment ministry responded to questions in rajya sabha, stating that the government monitors developments related to the Brahmaputra River, including Chinese hydropower projects, to protect the country's interests. india has discussed issues regarding transboundary rivers with china through established mechanisms and diplomatic channels.
As a downstream country, india has expressed its concerns to china about ensuring that activities upstream do not harm its interests. The indian government has also carried out assessments to address possible ecological and socio-economic impacts of hydroelectric projects in the Brahmaputra basin. China’s proposed dam could generate significantly more energy than its Three Gorges Dam, raising concerns about environmental effects on india and Bangladesh.
In response to other questions, the minister mentioned that NHPC Ltd. is following recommendations regarding the Lower Subansiri Hydro-electric Project (LSHEP), which is India’s largest hydroelectric project. The completion dates and costs associated with the project were also provided, along with ongoing opposition to dams in northeastern states due to environmental concerns. Recently, a committee recommended resuming operations for the Teesta Hydroelectric project after it was halted due to a major flood event.
