Cleaning of yamuna begins, target to clean the river in 3 years!
As per the promise made by the prime minister during the recently concluded assembly elections in delhi, the work of cleaning the yamuna river has started rapidly. From today, trash skimmers, water weed harvesters and dredge utility crafts have started the cleaning campaign to remove garbage in the river. delhi Lieutenant governor VK Saxena held a meeting with the Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary on thursday and directed to start the cleaning work immediately. Under this, a four-pronged strategy has been adopted.
1. First of all, the garbage, silt and other dirt deposited in the yamuna river will be removed.
2. Along with this, cleaning of Najafgarh drain, supplementary drain and other major drains will also be started.
3. The capacity and functioning of the existing sewage treatment plants (STPs) will be monitored daily to ensure that they are working effectively.
4. A time-bound plan will be implemented to build and commission new STPs/DSTPs to meet the shortage of about 400 MGD (million gallons per day) sewage treatment.
Meeting will be held every week
To successfully complete this campaign, many agencies including delhi Jal Board (DJB), Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC), Municipal Corporation (MCD), Environment Department, Public Works Department (PWD) and delhi Development Authority (DDA) will have to work in coordination with each other. All these works will be monitored at a high level every week. The delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has also been directed to keep a strict vigil on the dirty water being dumped into the drains without purification from industrial units.
Why did the previous attempt to clean the yamuna stall?
In fact, in january 2023, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) constituted a high-level committee (HLC) headed by Lieutenant governor VK Saxena, which started the work of cleaning the yamuna in mission mode. Five meetings of this committee were also held, in which the progress of the cleaning work was closely reviewed. However, in July 2023, the aam aadmi party (AAP) government led by then chief minister arvind kejriwal filed a petition in the supreme Court. After this, the then Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stayed the NGT order on 10 July 2023. After this, all the work related to the cleaning of yamuna came to a halt.
