Former congress mp Sajjan sentenced to life imprisonment…

Former congress mp Sajjan Kumar, convicted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot case, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Rouse Avenue Court. Sajjan Kumar is already serving life imprisonment in the delhi Cantt case. The court today sentenced him in the case of brutal murder of two Sikhs Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in Saraswati vihar area of delhi on 1 november 1984. The FIR related to this incident was registered at Saraswati vihar police station in North Delhi. The FIR was registered on the basis of the affidavit given by the complainants before the ranganath Mishra Commission. He was declared guilty by the court on 12 February.

delhi police and the victims had considered this case to be in the category of rarest of rare and had demanded death penalty against Sajjan Kumar. However, the court has sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Sajjan Kumar appealed for leniency

Just before the verdict, Sajjan Kumar had appealed for leniency in the sentence. He said in his arguments that there is no basis for awarding me death penalty in this case. Sajjan Kumar said, "I am 80 years old. I am suffering from many diseases with increasing age. I have been in jail since 2018. I have not received any furlough/parole since then."

I was not involved in any criminal case - Sajjan Kumar

He said, "I was not involved in any criminal case after the 1984 riots. My behavior in jail/during trial was always good/no complaint was received against me. Therefore, the possibility of my reform cannot be ruled out." Sajjan Kumar said that I have been an mp thrice. I have been a part of many projects for social welfare. I still consider myself innocent. The court should fix the minimum punishment for him in this case keeping in mind the human aspect.
