BJP accuses MCD mayor of violating rules…?

delhi bjp spokesperson praveen Shankar Kapoor and mp Yogendra Chandolia have accused the mayor of violating the delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957 (DMC Act 1957). He said that the mayor organized an illegal meeting of the MCD house, in which neither the Honorable Commissioner was present nor the opposition councilors. Only 25 to 30 aam aadmi party (AAP) councilors were present in this meeting.

Question on the validity of the meeting

bjp leaders say that many old issues were included in this meeting, which can have a serious impact on the financial condition of the MCD. Investigation of these issues is necessary. They have urged the mayor to declare the meeting held on february 26 illegal and canceled.

What is the delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957?

According to the delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957, the presence of the Mayor, Commissioner and all councilors is necessary in the meetings of the MCD. However, for some time now, there has been a situation of uproar and controversy in the meetings of the MCD.

There was controversy earlier too

For example, in january 2024 also, two important resolutions were passed amid uproar, including proposals to give the house the right to take financial decisions and to de-seal the shops of local shopping centers. During this too, the opposition bjp had termed these proposals unconstitutional. Apart from this, in the MCD meeting in october 2024 also, the ruling party had passed several resolutions, which were questioned by the opposition BJP. The bjp had termed these proposals illegal and said that it was a violation of the procedure and operating rules of the Municipal Corporation.

Demand to declare the meeting illegal

bjp leaders allege that the recent meeting organized by the Mayor also violates similar rules, as decisions were taken in the absence of necessary officials and opposition councilors. They have demanded the Mayor to declare this meeting illegal. Thus, the series of controversies and allegations and counter-allegations regarding compliance of rules and transparency continues in the meetings of delhi Municipal Corporation, which is affecting the functioning of the Municipal Corporation.
