Delhi Metro gets big success, 97 meter tunnel!

delhi Metro rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved another important milestone under Phase-4 project. The construction of underground tunnel between Chhatarpur Mandir and IGNOU station of Tughlakabad-Aerocity Corridor has been successfully completed. Today, a successful breakthrough process of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was completed at IGNOU Metro Station. Senior officials of DMRC and Auditor General's office were also present on this occasion. The tunnel was constructed through Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which is 97 meters long. Two parallel tunnels are being constructed in this section for up and down movement of the metro. The breakthrough of the first tunnel was successfully completed today, while the breakthrough of the second parallel tunnel is scheduled in march 2025.

Metro gets another success

The tunnel built at IGNOU Metro Station is located at an average depth of 26 meters. Its maximum depth is 36 meters and minimum depth is 15 meters. Now it has become one of the deepest tunnels of delhi Metro.

Use of latest technologies

The tunnel has been constructed using Earth Pressure Balancing Method (EPBM) technology. It was lined with precast concrete tunnel rings, which were prepared in a state-of-the-art automated casting yard established in Mundka. Steam curing system was used to strengthen the concrete.

Geological challenges were overcome

During tunneling, engineers faced various geological challenges, such as steep slopes, mica-rich soil and hard rocks. The screw auger was damaged during tunnel construction. After replacement, the work was completed smoothly.

Safety measures were taken care of

All necessary safety measures were taken in tunnel construction under the existing viaduct and surrounding structures. State-of-the-art sensitive equipment was installed on nearby buildings and surface structures to prevent land subsidence. A total of 40.109 km of underground track is being laid in Phase-4 of delhi Metro, which includes 19.343 km of underground section under the Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor. DMRC has already built more than 50 km of underground section in Phase-III, in which more than 30 TBMs were used.
