The government has made a big announcement on lentils, yellow peas and broken rice. In fact, on Sunday, the government announced that now 10 percent import duty will be imposed on lentils. Apart from this, the duty free import of yellow peas has been extended for 3 months. While the central government has said to impose 5 percent basic customs duty and 5 percent agriculture infrastructure and development cess on pulses from march 8.
Import of lentils and yellow peas
Before this announcement, the import of pulses was kept duty-free. At the same time, the central government allowed duty-free import of yellow peas in december 2023 and later it was extended 3 times till february 28. According to the report of Moneycontrol, the total import of pulses during 2024 was 67 lakh tonnes, in which the share of yellow peas was about 30 lakh tonnes.
Ban on export of broken rice lifted
The big news on broken rice is that the government has lifted the ban on its export. That is, now indian traders will be able to export broken rice to other countries. Let us tell you, the ban on the export of broken rice was imposed in september 2022. In this regard, a notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said that the export policy of broken rice has been amended with immediate effect and the ban on the export of broken rice has been lifted. Let us tell you, last year the government removed the minimum export price of US $ 490 per tonne on foreign shipment of non-basmati white rice.
Why did the government do this?
Actually, at present there is sufficient quantity of rice in the government warehouses of the country. Apart from this, retail prices are also under control. In the year 2023-24, india exported broken rice worth $ 194.5 million to countries like Gambia, Benin, senegal and Indonesia. At the same time, this figure was 983.4 million dollars in the year 2022-23. Whereas in the year 2021-22 this figure was 1.13 billion dollars.
