Is there preparation for action on BLA?
Amid the increase in terrorist attacks in balochistan and khyber pakhtunkhwa of pakistan, the government has called a closed-door meeting of a high committee of parliament related to security on tuesday (March 18, 2025), where the top military leadership will brief the MPs on the current situation.
On Monday, it was reported that prime minister Shahbaz Sharif has asked National assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to convene a security-related meeting in parliament at 1.30 pm on Tuesday. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's office (PMO), the military leadership will brief the parliamentary committee related to national security about the security situation.
This meeting is taking place in the light of several recent terrorist attacks in balochistan and khyber pakhtunkhwa provinces of Pakistan. Both these provinces share the border with Afghanistan.
The newspaper Dawn quoted a National assembly source as saying that since no parliamentary committee on security had been formed, members of the National Assembly's standing committees on defence and foreign affairs, members of the federal cabinet, chief ministers of the four provinces and leaders of all parliamentary parties or their representatives would attend the closed-door meeting.
Prime minister Sharif and army Chief General Asim Munir will attend the meeting. Meanwhile, the newspaper said that the government is reportedly planning a massive operation against the balochistan Liberation army (BLA) and other terrorist organisations involved in the increasing terror attacks in the province.
One of the prime minister's aides, Rana Ahsan Afzal, said that the government would soon convene a multi-party conference (MPC) to discuss the security situation. He also revealed plans to launch a massive operation against terrorists in balochistan but did not give any details.
The security situation appears to be turbulent in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and balochistan provinces, where the Tehreek-e-Taliban pakistan and the balochistan Liberation army have repeatedly attacked security personnel and civilians. On Sunday, five people, including three security personnel, were killed and 30 others injured when a paramilitary convoy was attacked by BLA militants in Balochistan's Noshki district.
